To fix a word you said wrong without re-recording, open Speech editing in the Crele app. Drop the recording, change the wrong word as the words come up, and the stretch comes back in your own voice. It takes the recording you have, wherever it was made, with no voice sample. It is a preview, for English and stretches up to 30 seconds, with 10 edits free.
Can you fix a wrong word without re-recording?
Yes. Crele’s speech editing preview changes the words in a recording in the voice of the person who said them. You change the words as text, and the stretch is remade with the new words in it. It needs only the recording: no second take, no transcript, no sample of the voice.
It is an experimental preview of a model we are training, so what it gets right will change as the training goes on.
How do you fix the word?
- Open Speech editing and drop the recording. A recording up to 30 seconds is edited whole. On a longer one, mark 5 to 30 seconds around the wrong word, and the rest of the file is never touched.
- Change the word. The words come up as they were spoken. Fix the name, the number or the phrase.
- Listen against the original. Keep the take if it sits right, or change the words and try again. Each take is kept, with a download.
- Put the stretch back. The edited stretch comes back as audio. Lay it over the original in your editor, at the same point.
Can you fix a word in a recording made outside a studio?
Yes. Speech editing takes the recording you have: a voice memo, a call, an interview in a cafe, the audio track of a video. It needs nothing recorded on the day, which is what the other ways to fix a word need: room tone, a pickup in the same room on the same microphone, a punch-in while you are still in the chair.
The bar the model is being trained for is an edit you cannot hear: the same voice, the same room, the same distance, no join on either side. It is a preview, so listen to every edit against the original before you use it.
What are the limits?
Speech editing is a preview, and the app holds it to these:
- English, for now.
- 5 to 30 seconds at a time. A short recording is edited whole; on a longer one, you mark the stretch.
- Fewer than half the words in the stretch. A name, a number, a phrase, a sentence inside it.
- The stretch comes back as audio, to put back in your editor. The whole recording with the edit in place is not in the preview.
- 10 edits free. Pro includes 200 a month, and an edit that fails costs nothing.
Questions
- Do I need a sample of my voice or a voice clone?
- No. Speech editing works from the recording itself: no voice sample, no transcript and nothing to set up. Drop the recording and change the words.
- Is there an alternative to Descript Overdub for fixing a word?
- Yes. Speech editing in the Crele app changes a word in a recording in the speaker's own voice, working from the recording alone, with no voice sample and no editing project to set up. It is a preview, for English, with 10 edits free.
- Can I fix a word in a video?
- On the audio track. The edited stretch comes back as audio to put back in your editor, and the picture is untouched. Best for voiceover, narration and shots where the mouth is not in close-up.
- Whose recordings can I edit?
- Your own, and recordings you have the right to edit, with the speaker's agreement. It is for fixing a take, not for putting words in someone's mouth.
- What does it cost?
- Your first 10 edits are free. Pro includes 200 edits a month. An edit that fails costs nothing.
